10 Medical Devices

Drug and vaccines delivery patch

The vaccine-delivery patch is a device which can deliver vaccines just by put the patch at the indicated skin area. It contains hundreds of microscopic needles that will dissolve into the skin when applied and the needle does not hurt as much as the usual needle. Not only health care worker can administer this patch, but also individuals without medical training to painlessly administer vaccines. This device can improve immunization against disease likes influenza.

Portable breathalyzer

Portable breathalyzer is used to detect presence of breast cancer by exhaling into it. When a person exhales into the device, compounds in the breath are trapped for further examination. The sensing methodology combines gas chromatography which is a technique for separating complex compounds with mass spectrometry, which identifies the chemical makeup of a substance. Specific patterns in the compounds are then found and used to confirm the presence or absence of the disease.

DETECT

Portable screening device called DETECT is used to identify neurological impairment. It makes quick neuropsychological assessments to identify mild cognitive impairment, which could indicate the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The device runs patients through a 10-minute battery of visual stimuli that requires simple responses, assessing cognitive abilities such as reaction time and memory capabilities.

SpectroPen

This is a hand-held device called SpectroPen to help surgeons see the edges of tumors in real time during surgery. Statistics indicate that complete removal, or resection, of most solid tumors is the single most important predictor of patient survival. The device detects tiny nanoparticles coupled to an antibody that sticks to molecules on the outsides of tumor cells.

Glove with vibrating fingertips

Glove with a vibrating fingertip is used to improve sense of touch. The device uses an actuator made of a piezoelectric material to generate high-frequency vibration. The actuator is attached to the side of the fingertip so that the palm-side of the finger remains free and the individual wearing the glove can continue to manipulate objects.

ToucHB

ToucHB is a simple, portable, low-cost device that can test for anemia without having to penetrate the skin. ToucHB can analyze the level of hemoglobin and oxygen in the blood as well as blood pressure. All you have to do is put the clip on the patient’s finger and flick a switch, after twenty seconds the devise brings up the amounts and the nurse can diagnose the patient.

Bandage to help fight infection

A dressing bandage that both detects and treats infection in wounds is being developed by scientists at the University of Bath. The bandages would release antibiotics from nanocapsules and change colour to show the presence of harmful bacteria. The dressing is only triggered by disease-causing bacteria, which produce toxins that break open capsules containing the antibiotics and dye.

AliveCor ECG

The AliveCor ECG Case is used where patients place their iPhone case on their chest and the iPhone app can then analyze, wireless transmits and stores the ECG reading. This device can immediately detect if a patient have heart problem whenever they are away from the hospital, hence the patient can get immediate medical attention. This device is also as accurate as the ECG machine at the hospital.

SmartBra detect breast cancer earlier

SmartBra is developed in order to help women detect breast cancer earlier. Helping to make early detection even earlier, a Nevada-based company developed a BSE (breast self-exam) bra with sensors integrated into the cups. The sensors detect slight variations in breast surface temperature that could indicate tumor growth.

Contact lenses that change colour according to blood sugar levels

These hydrogen contact lenses provide a non-invasive way of checking the level of glucose by changing colors each time the level of sugar in blood increases or lowers. There are nanoparticles implanted in the lenses to detect the changes. These particles come into contact with glucose molecules found in human tears. As a result of chemical reaction, the lenses change their color, warning the person about their sugar levels.
